Ain’t nothing in th’ realm of man or spirit be impossible, this th’ conjureman knows for sure…

Chapter Twenty

“I can’t go to the police!” Angela shrieked at Dylan a short while later.

“If you don’t, and Reilly and the GBI find out about this, your sweet little ass is grass, Angela. It would be better to take this to them now than to have them learn you were hiding it.”

They stood almost toe to toe in the cabin of Dylan’s boat, squared off like prizefighters. After Spriggs had left, Angela had closed the store and called Dylan, who, apparently satisfied that she would be all right at work, had finally gone back to his boat to get some of his own work done. He’d insisted on coming for her, but she told him to stay put, that she needed to come to him. “You remember that sanctuary you were talking about?” she’d said. “I think I might be needing it.”

She was sure of it now. Her already shaky world was ready to crumble from beneath her, and she was scared. It was bad enough that she’d been stalked, impersonated, and all but accused of murder, but this turn of events left her feeling as if she’d lost all control over her fate.

“I know you’re right, Dylan,” she said, her head beginning to hurt. “But what if Reilly is Clifford’s man? If he is, then I’d be playing right into his hands. He’d throw me in jail the minute the words were out of my mouth. Even if he’s not crooked, he probably still wouldn’t believe me. He already thinks I’m lying about not knowing Slade.”

“Then go to Vince Howard at the GBI. You know you can trust him.”

“I will.” Angela collapsed onto the settee, feeling uncomfortably confined in the close quarters of the boat. “But I don’t want to go empty-handed. You know, Dylan, one reason Vince took on the investigation of the SPD is because I brought him enough evidence that he couldn’t ignore it. I may have worked for him and have friends in the bureau, but Vincent Howard and the rest are professionals. They’ll want something concrete to go on. Even if they buy into our theory that this is all a set-up, they’re going to want to know how I think Quintos got Slade to change his will.”

Dylan cocked his head. “And how do you think he did that?”

“Spriggs looked legit, but he might not be a lawyer at all. This whole thing,” she said, indicating the papers that lay on the table nearby, “could be phony. Or Spriggs could be a crooked lawyer on Quintos’s payroll. Maybe Slade didn’t change the will at all. Maybe Quintos paid Spriggs to do it, knowing he was about to knock Slade off. With Slade dead, it’d be hard to prove he didn’t make out the new will. Or maybe Quintos sent an imposter to Spriggs’s office, somebody posing as Slade, like somebody’s been posing as me.” The possibilities spun in her head.
